Matteo Ricci (1552-1610), Italian Jesuit missionary and scholar, standing on left, with Hsü Kuang-ch'i or Paul Xu Guangqi (1562-1633), writer on agriculture and translator of European books on Mathematics, both holding fans, their backs turned to an altar, on which stands a crucifix, picture of the Virgin and Child and hangings with Chinese characters; tablets above the figures; an illustration to Athanasius Kircher, China Monumentalis Illustrata, by Anonymous, French, engraving on paper, circa 1670.
