Black painted steel chain with brass trappings.
Gunther's chain is a measuring device used for land surveying, and as a technology predates the invention of the theodolite, although it appears to have been used into the 20th century. A reference to it can be found in the 19th century book 'The Practical Surveyor' - http://tinyurl.com/b3acayc
