On the inside the box is lined with a shiny cream material on the left (lid) with a manufacturer's label stating it is from Garrard & Co. ltd., and a cream velvet material holding the larger main medal and a smaller version to its left. The medal(s) are held by purple ribbed ribbon, made of bronze with an cast insignia of the crown. Painted pale blue on the "petals", the core of the medal is a red ring with the words "FOR GOD AND THE EMPIRE" printed on it, and a gold depiction of Britannia.
Frederick George Donnan received the CBA for wartime services in 1920, the result of his collaboration with others, such as H.S. Taylor, E.K. Rideal and J.R. Partington, as they attempted to synthesize ammonia, nitric acid and mustard gas.
