'jaws' of the forceps have small spikes in grooves for gripping. Number 18 written in white paint on side, and in blue ink on inside of handle. 'Crombie' stamped on inside of handle.
.19 - originally catalogued as GEN-66A, metal lithotomy forceps, Two arms joined together by screw. Ends of handles - 1 curved around in U shape, other in a closed circle. 'jaws' of forceps have small spikes in grooves for gripping. Number 19 written on side of one of jaws in white paint, 2nd number in black ink on inside of handle. White / pinkish paint on inside of handle, close to screw.

.23 - originally catalogued as GEN-66C, metal forceps. Two arms, no screw visible. Each end of handle ends as a closed circle. Long jaws, smooth but with small grip at end that ends with two 'teeth'. Number 23 in white on side

.42 - metal tonsil guillotine, 42 in white on flat surface of screw on sliding piece

.45 - unknown metal tool, possible a speculum or used to hold joints open, 45 in white on horizontal bar
.46- originally catalogued as GEN-66E, metal forceps with wood grip on one arm. Two arms connected with no visible screw. Handles curved but not turned at the end. 'jaws' - one side wooden (larger of the two arms), the other bare metal with incised diagonal lines running whole length. Number 46 written in white paint, and repeated on inside of handle, in black ink.
.49 - tweezers, tortoiseshell handle with metal tweezer arms, 49 in white on handle
.50 - unknown tool, wood handle with two metal arms/blades ending in curved cresent shape, 50 in white on handle
.51 - small knife, tortoiseshell handle with metal retracting knife, 51 in white on handle
.52 - unknown tool, wood handle with metal probe ending in two-pronged tip, 52 in white on handle
.55 - unkown tool, wood handle with metal arm and sliding adjustable metal hook, 55 in white on handle
.60 - originally catalogued as GEN-66D, metal forceps with openings in tips of arms. Two arms held together, no visible screw. Ends of handle - 1 curved around in U shape, the other in a closed circle. Handle markedly curved in a 'wave' before end. 'Jaws' have holes at the end, shaped like Neolithic axe heads (!). Incised / pecked groove around this for gripping. Some rust inside this groove. Number 60 on side in white paint, and inside handle in blue ink.
.69 - scalpel with blunt tip, wood handle with metal blade, 69 in white on handle
.73 - consists of three separate pieces: knife with wood handle and metal blade, wood sheath bound with leather straps, and separate metal blade; 73 in white on wood sheath
.76 - originally catalogued as GEN-024, stethoscope consisting of two wood segments and one segment with a metal tube inserted through bell-shaped wood piece, 76.1 in white on middle wood segment
Wooden tube in two parts that can be attached by screwing them together. When together one end is flat, the other is partly hollowed out to form an egg cup shape. A circular hole runs the whole way down the tube. The rim at the egg cup side is missing a small section, and shows cracking running from the rim half the way down the middle join. That same half has a small crack running from the join end towards the outer rim, c 1/6th of the way. The other half has a large split running its whole length, possibly as a result of over tightening of the screw.. The half also has a small white sticker at the end, no writing visible. There is a build up of black material either side of the join of the two halves. The number '76.1.' is close to the egg cup end in white paint.
.80 - three cauterizing tools: one with a curved tip, one with a straight tip (originally catalogued as GEN-71B), and one with a tip bent at 90 degrees (originally catalogued as GEN-71A)
Originally 71A - grey metal body (handmade) with dark wooden (turned) handle and brass ring between the metal body and wooden handle. Metal body is bent at end into L shape, where the end is small arm. Acorn shaped point at end, pitted and marked (by heat?) and very dark grey. Pitting continues up 'arm' until the bend. Brass ring is incised all the way around handle at centre. small piece of wire wrapped around metal body with coiled end, can slide up and down body. Wooden handle missing part (c1/3rd) from wood near the brass ring, incised lines show where wood is still present. incised with two similar lines at the widest part of handle. The side of handle that is missing part shows sign of heat (?) damage. Scrapes and scratches on other parts of handle. Number 80 in white paint on handle.
Originally 71B - grey metal body with wooden handle (turned). Straight metal body (handmade?), end with 'acorn' shape. Shows signs of pitting and damage from heat (?). Small piece of wire wrapped around end of body, close to handle, with coiled end. Can slide up and down body. Wooden handle - two incised lines around end of handle close to metal body. Handle worn smooth. Crack runs along body of handle. Lighter rectangular area of handle shows where sticker might have once been attached? Scrapes and marks on body. White number 80 painted at end of handle.
Black and white photograph with collection shows 3 knives and a small leather pouch with instruments inside. Two of the knives are numbered 63, the pouch is numbered 70. Both are missing from this group. On the reverse of the picture is a hand written note 'Robert Liston's amputation knives and instruments. UCH museum'.
