Animal respirator used to keep animals breathing whilst being vivisected
Animal respirator manufactured by C.F. Palmer with wire attached, no plug. Metal plaque on motor reading 'C.F. Palmer (LONDON) LTD. EFFRA ROAD, LONDON, S.W.2. MADE IN ENGLAND. TYPE A.C. H.P. 1/20 R.P.M. 1425 CYCLES 50 PHASE 1 VOLTS 220/240'. Top of piston engraved PALMER MADE IN ENGLAND. 1 inlet 1 outlet labelled 'from lungs' and 'to lungs' . 1 inlet and 1 outlet on opposite side. Screw lid labelled 'oil'. Switch at side to turn on. Cannester fitted to respirator labelled 'TECALEMIT LTD. BRITISH PATENT NO. 621173 CAT. NO. GB2802'. Wooden base, metal motor and piston, rubber coated wiring, rope pulley connecting both wheels to pump piston. Piston stand and motor screwed to wooden base. C.F. Palmer Ltd founded by Charles Fielding Palmer, a physiological instrument maker. Company absorbed by Harvard Apparatus Company in 1987 now located at 403 Brixton Rd, SW9. Would have been used during physiological experiments on animals (e.g. dogs) to maintain breathing. Possibly Slow Speed Combination G160.
