Wax encaustic portrait on wood panel of young woman with dark wavy hair and a mud-coloured band painted around edge of face, sometimes used as base for added curls. Face and neck cream and pink, lips probably pink, pigment flaky with patches missing. Subject wears globular gold earrings known as Pompeii (A.D. 50-70),a boat-shaped necked tunic and cloak over left shoulder. Portrait split longitudinally at left, right side joined from two main pieces and several smaller pieces, triangular gap at base; top broken unevenly. Large patch of linen attached to back by resin.
