Retort, copper riveted and soldered along seams.
Retort, copper riveted and soldered along seams. Circular base, after c11cm circular lip protrudes all the way around body, with 10 studs / screws around body attaching this base to upper part of retort. Upper body has two handles on either side, attched to body with four studs / screws. On the 'back' of the upper body is an opening (premumed) with a screw cap covering it. The spout of teh retort is soldered onto the body and expands as it rises, then narrows towards the end. Spout roughly 400mm long. Whole retort green with corrosion. Copper colour can been seen by looking under base.
One of a pair - other in Science Museum. Used in Williamson's famous experiments leading to paper on etherification. Not certain whether these are the ones actually used in that experiment.
